San Mateo, California annual festivals are community-based and fulfilling. One of the most popular events in the city is one that falls in June, and that is the San Mateo County Fair. Originally known as the “Little Flower Show,” the county fair began in 1926 and has been held every year since. It is now held at the San Mateo County Event Center at 2495 South Delaware Street, a place where shoppers can meet local vendors at exhibits open to the public, attend concerts where local artists give their best performances and go on rides at the carnival which will delight children and bring back fond memories of childhood for adults. The fair is also home to Senior Day where outstanding seniors 62 years old and older are recognized with free admission. Senior Day also includes special exhibits from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that showcase unique products and entertainment, including the presentation of the Outstanding Senior Award, who you can nominate on the fair’s website. In addition, a handful of friendly competitions are organized during this event, including the Agriculture, Creative Home Arts, New Technology, Literary Arts and Horse shows.

Another popular event in San Mateo is the Bay Area Aloha Festival, which is held on the first weekend of every August. Also held at the San Mateo County Event Center, the festival is hosted by the Pacific Islanders’ Cultural Association over two days. Offering free admission and the Bay Area’s best music, dance and art talents, the festival’s highlights include Polynesian dance, Pacific Islander music, arts and crafts vendors, educational exhibits for both children and adults and tasty island cuisine. There will even be an ‘Ohana Korner for young kids to participate in simple activities.

San Mateo also hosts the Downtown San Mateo SummerFest, which is a new festival that is sure to be a popular event for years to come. With the first annual Summerfest held in June 2013, the event brings community members and visitors to have fun in historic downtown San Mateo, where the city’s best shopping and dining is. Featuring arts and crafts, food vendors, cooking demonstrations, a variety of entertainment and children’s activities, the festival is a great occasion for the entire family. Presented by the Downtown San Mateo Association, the festival allows local businesses to showcase their work, whether it deals with art, food, entertainment or more.
